As a patient with chronic pancreatitis (CP), you may have trouble getting all the nutrients you need from your diet. Supplements that support your specific needs may help.1,2

Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency

When you have EPI, you may have a harder time getting nutrients from your diet because your pancreas isn't making enough enzymes.1,3–5 These enzymes help break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates from the food you eat so that their nutrients can be absorbed by your body.3,6

The most common cause of EPI is chronic pancreatitis, but it can also be caused by other conditions like cystic fibrosis and pancreatic surgery.3

So what can you
do about it?

Your healthcare provider may have you take PERT (pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy) to replace the enzymes that your pancreas can no longer make.3,6 But even if you are taking PERT, you may also benefit from supplements by providing your body with the essential nutrients it needs.2,7–10

Supplements are complementary to PERT — supplements do not treat EPI but provide the additional nutrients you may need, like fat-soluble vitamins. Due to certain EPI challenges, your healthcare provider may recommend that you take a combination of PERT and supplements to optimize nutrition.2
